What is Myofascial Release
and What Can It Do For me?

Fascia is an integrated web of collagen-rich connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place. Fascia provides internal structure, lubrication, sensory information, and is highly innervated. It is an incredibly complex organ and we are learning more about it every day.

Myofascial Release is a gentle and deeply effective form of bodywork that originated out of the work of osteopathic physicians including that of the founder of Craniosacral Therapy, Andrew Still. The term was originally coined in the 1960s and the work is thought to have two primary branches or philosophical models, one is closely aligned with the work of Ida Rolf Ph.D. and one was developed by John Barnes DPT.

The primary goal of this work is to slowly and gracefully stretch and release the fascia of the musculoskeletal, visceral, and nervous systems through sustained pressure and a finely tuned and receptive touch. Myofascial release utilizes variable pressure depending on the depth and density of the tissue being addressed and utilizes specific and yielding directional forms of touch to address the areas and layers of tension and restriction. Sometimes we use very light pressure to palpate the system and allow it to unwind, sometimes we use more direct moderate pressure to address layers of bound-up connective tissue. We never apply more pressure than is needed however as the body will always resist force and this creates more stress and defensiveness within the body.

Myofascial release is an extremely effective form of bodywork that thoroughly relieve tension, torsion (leading to misalignment), pain, and restricted movement in the body. It is, however, a truly integrated healing art that addresses the body/mind/spirit system in a totally holistic way. Through touch, sustained presence, and following the deep intelligence of the individual's body, we address not only the structure of the body but help release trauma and stress and increase awareness, peacefulness, and embodiment in each individual.

Please know that this work is very close to our hearts. It's always unique and original and allows space for each individual to unfold in their power, perception, and freedom. It also enables us, as therapists, to be guided by intuition and receptivity in a unique and powerful way. We hope that you'll want to try it with an open mind and heart. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
